Everyone involved with the Advent Book Blog believes that we should support and preserve independent voices and ideas in our culture.
We have a soft spot for independent book shops who hand-sell their hand-picked stock to customers old and new.
And we admire the work of all of those editors, designers, typesetters, interns, marketing/publicity people, and others who work hard to keep the quality books coming from independent small presses across Canada and around the world.
We admire the determination and the craft of these people who work so hard against such long odds to bring us the best work that they can.
That’s not to say that we’re down on big publishers or big retailers because we’re not.
We bought 1Q84 on the day it hit the shelves. If we could have we would have broken embargo to get it sooner!
And we ogle the occasional scented candle display on our way to the escalator if you catch our drift.
We believe that as long as you’re buying new books and supporting creativity then it’s all good in the ‘hood.
All we’re saying is, you know, if you have a chance to support your local book shop by purchasing that beautifully crafted book from the small press, then you should.
It makes the world a better place.
