The Recommend

Ready Player One is the perfect book for readers looking for something fun/pop. It’s the story of a kid with nothing, trying to make his way in a shitty near-future world. His only shot is to come out on top in the hunt for the world’s most insane easter egg. In order to win the day, he’ll have to unbeatable at Joust, know more about the careers of John Hughes and Matthew Broderick than their own moms, kill it at D&D, and be able to play Rush tunes from memory, and much more.

This book clocks in at almost 400 pages. It’ll get read in a single sitting. It’s the one for readers born 1975–85, with a soft spot for pop/online culture and video games.

Ernest Cline  is a huge fucking nerd. He’s the kind of nerd you want to be friends with forever, who you wish you’d known growing up, who you want to trade playlists, ROMs, and stupid GIFs with. The crazy thing is, he wants those things too. Blog about his book, he’ll start following you on Twitter, send you links to weird old TV shows, and basically make you feel like you’re part of his crew. He’s an American, but he gets the big nod this year on account of his rad accessible book, also because he’s getting it right online.
